Here from René Eespere (b. 1953) is a seemingly modest collection of solos, duos and trios, culminating with a short string quartet. But it is endearing music, mostly diatonic but not backward looking, which gradually works a spell, so well ordered is the sequence of instruments and their combinations. Usually there is development of a single idea and maybe sometimes a minimalist feel, but 'always-saying-it-differently' without over-rigorous workings out; meditative and improvisational qualities are never far away.

The morning of sculpture for the piquant trio of flute, guitar and vibraphone 'soars away into other spiritual spheres' (Kristel Pappel). The call to attention by trumpet which begins the unfortunately titled (for English-speaking readers) Flatus 1 is a small surprise and the piece a useful addition to the rather popular trumpet/organ repertoire. The equally dramatic and closely argued string quartet finishes with a characteristic Delian morendo. It would be a rewarding addition to the repertoire of an ensemble looking for a not too recondite novelty, one which would go down well with any chamber music audience.
