An Italian Sojourn Trio Settecento Cedille Records CDR 90000 099 (70:51; Recorded December 2006 at the Music Institute of Chicago) In a personal note she describes a decade of her evolution of thought and technique for baroque playing, her capability enhanced by working with a 1770 Gagliano instrument in original condition to capture the "new voice" for instruments which developed from about 1700, "the voice of the Cremona violin" (John Mark Rosendaal). I would characterise her playing here as super-refined, a little cool rather than as flamboyant as, say, our Andrew Manze. We found the whole of this disc captivating, and full of variety; sample the bucolic drone in Tartini's Sonata Pastorale In my experience, Cedille CDs from Chicago rarely let you down. Peter Grahame Woolf Schoop, Schmelzer, Muffat, Krieger, Buxtehude, Rachel Barton Pine, baroque violin We have had great pleasure from the varied Cedille CDs of versatile Chicago based violinist Rachel Barton Pine and this is no exception; a good selection of mainly 17 C rarities, with a couple of items from JSB himself. This is a well matched, stylish trio, and the organ helps to vary the textures. Recommended. Peter Grahame Woolf |
