SCHUBERT All Schubert's Dances
Raimondo Campisi (piano)
BEL AIR DVD-audio BAM2035
[1987 remastered January 2005 TT: 6 hours 24
minutes and 10 seconds]
This Schubert DVD intrigued me for its technological capacity; the six
and a half hours of Schubert's 445 Dances for piano on one cheap
disc!!
No, you won't want to listen to them all straight through, but
it is noteworthy that they have been remastered from 1978 in very
acceptable sound and sympatheically played by Raimondo Campisi - without this Italian
pianist, new to me, obviously going onto auto-pilot.
There is in fact a good deal of variety; you may know Schubert's Noble
and Sentimental waltzes best in connection with Ravel's Valses
Nobles et Sentimentales? The originals are here and include collections
of Minuets, Ländler & Ecosses, Galops, German Dances etc too;
displaying a range of imagination in smaller forms that is very
impressive. The French Diapaison properly commends Campisi for
finding "the mysterious harmony which can rise even from the least
important phrase" and pointing it appropriately.
It is playing contentedly (for me) on my computer whilst I write; it
didn't play on my CD player. The dances are very playable by amateurs,
for whom they were intended,
and I have an inexpensive collection from Dover Publications. Schubert
wouldn't mind if you had it on as background music for a party?
And the price of this DVD-audio? A mere €15 from Bel Air on line.
