A warm welcome back to the catalogue for this very pleasing recording.
It starts with Schubert's well known Shepherd on the Rock with Helen Donath's meltingly clear soprano being echoed by the clarinet of Dieter Klocker whilst Klaus Donath provides the piano landscape. An instantly successful combination, which immediately spawned imitators.
The pieces by Lachner and Kalliwoda are agreeable enough, but do little more than follow in Shubert's footsteps.
Spohr however, takes the grouping to a new level, blending the sonorities with a sure touch into a myriad of musical colours.
The recently re-mastered recording was made in Berlin , somewhere with a good sharp acoustic. Shortish measure for a CD these days, but more would be superfluous.
