pieces by 20th C. Chilean composers Andres
Alcaide Andres
Alcaide MPO PPCD001 [TT 61:18] (Email enquiries) This is a valuable and enjoyable overview of shorter piano pieces by established 20th C. Chilean composers of the middle and older generations, of varied stylistic persuasions. There are also major works by Yoshihisha Taira of Japan and Alicia Terzian, whom I met at the ISCM Festival in Luxembourg, a cosmopolitan Argentinian composer of enormous energy who divides her time between her own country and her home in Lausanne. Taira studied with Jolivet, Dutilleux and Messiaen and teaches composition in Paris. He has a distinctive compositional voice and his 12 min Sonomorphia 1 explores 'living silence'. Alicia Terzian, whose early violin concerto and Tangos for today by contemporary composers I have reviewed previously, is a formidable, prolific composer and ambassadress for her country. Her style has changed with the times and remains ever forward-looking, with unabated energy as she nears 70. The fourteen sections of Terzian's Atmosferas [13:27] of 1969 are well contrasted in rhythm and melody, laced with glissandi and clusters. Maria Paz Santibanez
and her partner are both, on this showing, excellent pianists and
this CD is well recorded and produced, with support from the Chilean
government. There are informative texts in Spanish and French, and
photos of everyone. Recommended. Copyright ©
