Elgar arr. Payne

Elgar/Payne Symphony No. 3 (1995)
Pomp and Circumstance March No. 6 (2006)

Sapporo Symphony Orchestra/Tadaaki Otaka

Signum SIGCD118

I haven't heard the Elgar 3 live, but remember being convinced by the budget-priced Naxos version (q.v. Paul Daniel and the Bournemouth SO's new Naxos recording with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is conducted at white heat - - make one marvel anew at the sheer bravery of Anthony Payne's undertaking and the raw genius of his (and Elgar's) achievement [Music Web]).

I feel less so after listening to the newer Japanse version, and that soon after a compelling performance of No 1 at the Festival Hall... Whilst Mahler's 10th has been firmly absorbed into the canon, Elgar's unfinished sketches do not seem to me up to his best, despite all Anthony Payne's efforts. There are now several versions available (see also NMC, and LSO Live), with a comparative review, also on Music Web.
