Hallgrimsson Piano Music

Simon Smith

Delphian DCD 34051 [40 tracks, 79 mins; Full Price, release August 2008]

A pleasant CD of piano music mainly originating from the Scottish-based Icelandic-born Haflidi Hallgrimsson's student days. He is known for his 'epigrammatic miniatures', none of them earth-shakingly original, but many good for piano teachers to consider.

The six Homage to Mondrian pieces are this cellist/composer's 'most serious and ambitious attempt at composing contemporary virtuoso piano music' and they will be effective in piano recitals.

All well played by Simon Smith, and with Delphian's always admirable production values; but of rather specialised appeal and surely overpriced?
