Piano Trios No.1 op.24 & No.2 op.36.

CPO 7773352

A lifelong friend of Brahms, founder of the Bach Society of Leipzig, and professor of composition at the Hochschule fur Musik in Berlin, the name of Heinrich von Herzogenberg (1843-1900) crops up often in connection with Brahms.

Disc of two of his piano trios are welcome; sub-Brahms, but good listening for those who prefer music they don't know, though not in the 'indispensable' class.

Satisfactory performances and recording. Not likely to become repertoire pieces in chamber music recitals, but certainly worth the familiarity provided by cpo.

As is cpo's style, there is a comprehensive (? over-inclusive) essay from the International Herzogenberg Society. But small print and minimal paragraphing may be off-putting to many not-young afficionados of German 19C. chamber music likely to have deteriorating eyesight...
