Elgar Orchestral Music Elgar: Enigma Variations, Op. 3 Signum Classics SIGCD168 Here is another of the successful Philharmonia own label (with Signum) releases. Recorded from performances whilst the Royal Festival Hall was closed for refurbishment, these three orchestral works make a rewarding programme. The Enigma Variations receive a magisterial performance at Croydon's Hall and the others are recorded at the smaller Queen Elizabeth Hall on South Bank. Least well known is the lengthy Overture, and this is one of the most convincing performances I have heard of a work that is quite difficult to bring off. The audiences at these live performances only become evident with their applause. At their modest £8 pricing, this deserves to continue the success of the others in this series, see http://www.musicalpointers.co.uk/reviews/cddvd08/BeethovenBrahmsSchubertShostakovich.html Peter Grahame Woolf |
