(1818)

Challenge Classics CC7231

Nikolaus Freiherr von Krufft (1779 - 1818) combined worked as a civil servant with extensive musical activities, including composing 24 Preludes & Fugues after J.S. Bach and many lieder. He is featured in Graham Johnson's disc Schubert's Friends and Contemporaries.

His music for bassoon is notably demanding, requiring a wide range and considerable virtuosity to negotiate their enormous jumps and daredevil modulations.

This is a very enjoyable disc of unfamiliar repertoire, and should certainly be brought to the attention of all student bassoonists. The excellent players here are based in The Hague and active on the European early music scene
