These ambitious discs stake a claim for an experienced German violist at a time when more viola CDs are being made than ever before.

They are less than compelling for the "ordinary" listener but provide useful repertoire suggestions for violists and should find a place in conservatory libraries.

The playing is fine throughout, but the music itself underwhelming.
