Honegger Violin Sonatas

Violin Sonata No. 1, H 17
Violin Sonata No. 2, H 24
Sonata for Solo Violin, H 143
Violin Sonata No. 0, H 3

Laurence Kayaleh (violin) & Paul Stewart (piano)

Naxos 8.572192

Medtner Violin Sonatas Naxos 8.570298-99

Honegger's major orchestral/choral works are no longer played often, dominating the concert repertoire to the neglect of the chamber music, which it is time now to get to know.

These are splendid violin sonatas, worthy for a place in recitals by musicians who are not bound by concert promoters to the 'standards".

The expansive Nos 1 is perhaps the richest, No 2 more compact, and the solo sonata would spice a traditional Bach sequence and wake up anyone inclined to doze whilst hearing too many of JSB sonatas and partitas straight off...

An excellent duo, who have also done sterling service for Medtner, whose violin sonatas are likewise neglected.

Both deserve support and at Naxos' modest budget price, no need to hesitate.
