Korngold Quartets Doric String Quartet Chandos CHAN 10611 [2009, 79'57"] Far more convincing here than at Wigmore Hall in April, Korngold's 1st Quartet comes across in this fine, sonorous recording as a very worthy major work by this incredibly givted young composer, who had completed it as relaxation after the rigours of composing the Die Todt Stadt opera. No 2 is light weight, 22 mins as against the former's 32, and has a scintillating intemezzo and a celebration of Viennese waltz finale. The third and last draws upn Korngold's very successful film music; his Hollywood contract authorised re-cycling of music which he feared would quickly disappear; but the films proved so popular that they are still around on DVD etc... An excellent, well-filled disc, (my wife wondered if they had to hurry a bit to get them all on, but i trust not) which should help to restore these quartets to the repertore. Peter Grahame Woolf
