BRITTEN: Suite; PATTERSON: Spiders, Bugs; BYRNES: Visions in Twilight; YUN: In Balance – TAKEMITSU: Stanza II for harp and tape

Lavinia Meijer, harp

Channel Classics CCS SA 29709

Lavinia Meijer's enterprising collection Harp Visions is one of the best of all harp recordings now available.

Instrumental techniques have improved exponentially in recent years, the harp no exception. This young Korean/Dutch harpist combines musical sensitivity with needle-sharp precision in realising every moment in each of these pieces, of which Britten's Suite will be the only item generally known. Never popular generally, it receives an account of great refinement. She has worked with some of the composers and Paul Patterson - two of his suites are included - was delighted with the collaboration; don't miss seeing her confront an invasion of mosquitos !

The American composer Garrett Byrnes' wide ranging Visions in Twilight (2000), a competition test piece in 2004 has become Lavinia's calling card internationally.

Yun's In balance is the largest movement here - a major composer too little played - and Takemitzu's Stanza II with tape brings the recital to a satisfying close. Let's hope Lavinia Meijer's travels don't continue to miss out UK !

Lavinia Meijer's first CD
with Divertissements by Salzedo, Caplet & Ibert (see video) is less challenging for listeners, but thoroughly enjoyable.
