PIERRE MONTEUX 1958-59 Beethoven, Brahms, Glinka, Hindemith, Mendelssohn, Milhaud, Schumann, R. Strauss Boston Symphony Orchestra/Monteux with Stern, Serkin etc WHRA WHRA6034 (11cds) One of the best-loved of conductors, this is the latest CD digital transfer compilation and it has many treasures and some novelties and many fine performances of "standards". Amongst the latter, I enjoyed the Beethoven/Weingartner Grosse Fuge which sets it off and the extreme modernity of Milhaud's Les Eumenides Act 3 prelude, which was new to me. There is a decent essay and some good illustrations; my review box contained two of disc 7, but lacked No 8 with the once popular D'Indy Symphony on a French Mountain Song Op. 25, which I hadn't heard for a long time. Recommended to Monteux fans and others who have good memories of attending his concerts. See full track list Peter Grahame Woolf |
