Messiaen & Debussy

Olivier Messiaen Visions de L’Amen
Claude Debussy En blanc et noir

URSULA OPPENS & JEROME LOWENTHAL (pianos)

CEDILLE RECORDS CDR 90000 119

A splendid two-piano disc recorded by eminent pianists with the advantages of modern recording.

Visions de L’Amen is one of Messiaen's most enduring masterworks, and it was a privilege to hear him play piano 2 in London in support of his former teenage pupil and subsequent life-partner Yvonne Loriod; later, I had the splendid recording by the youthful Labeque sisters. The three Debussy pieces make the perfect coupling.

I have only heard Ursula Oppens live once; a memorable occasion at Amsterdam during which Elliott Carter's cello sonata was interrupted by a slow cascade of coins from a jacket unwisely put onto the balcony rails at the lamented Ysbreker concert hall...

Check it out on the Cedille website where this CD is well supported, with the full documentation and easily accessed sound excerpts (some may think 61 mins short measure these days?).
