Siegbert Rampe (harpsichord, clavichord and fortepiano)

MDG 341 1311-2

A wide ranging collection, which has given us great pleasure, especially because of a generous selection played expertly on clavichord - a copy of a late 18C Schiedmayer instrument (tracks 6-25) - Mozart owned and used a clavichord for private music-making.

An interesting curiosity is the brilliant toned Shudi harpsichord with a pedal-actuated "Venetian swell," which allowes graduated dynamic effects. Rampe's playing is always alert and characterful, never descending into routine even for the smaller and less important pieces.

Documentation is thorough and recording qualtiy (various venues, 2006-7) good. An absorbing disc which has us wanting to explore others in this stimulating series by a renowned early keyboard musicologist and performer.
