Déodat de Séverac: Le Coeur du Moulin Sophie Marin-Degor, Jean-Sébastien Bou, Pierre-Yves Pruvot, Marie-Thérèse Keller, etc Choeurs de l'Opéra de Tours/Orchestre Symphonique Région Centre-Tours/Jean-Yves Ossonce Timpani CD 1C1176 [World Premiere recording; 76 mins; UK distributor Discovery]
The Heart of the Mill is a well written, undisturbing little opera with a basic triangle story but no tragic ending; a young man comes back home to find his sweetheart is married… Affectionate reunion, thoughts of resuming their love; prudence rules and he duly departs again... Debussy liked it and so do I. The performance and recording are fine, and the production is lavish, with bi-lingual texts and extensive notes by Jeremy Drake to tell you all you'll ever need to know about de Severac (1872 – 1921).
