Shostakovich: Symphony No 10 Royal Liverpool P O/Vasily Petrenko This is a great bargain - a distinguished performance, very well recorded at Philharmonic Hall in September 2009, of one of my favourites of the symphonies which, says Richard Whitehouse "- - are at the absolute centre of the 'modern' music repertoire as it appears to the non-specialist concert goer". Nowadays we restrict my hearings of Shostakovich and Mahler symphonies, but this one is a favourite and it comes up fresh as new. I join the chorus of praise which has followed Petrenko, St Petersburg born and educated, now in charge of the RLPO and also Britain's important National Youth Orchestra. I am happy to defer to the detailed rave MusicWeb review and endorse JQ's recommendations of this series, which are nowhere challenged.
