Mendelssohn and Franck String Quartets A probably unique coupling of two of the greatest string quartets of the late 19C. Franck's of 1890 is lengthy and epitomises his innovations in cyclic form. Mendelssohn's last quartet Op 80 is scarifying in its desolate anguish; would better they'd been listed in reverse order, and the disc is best played thus - with a break before the emotionally exhausting Mendelssohn. The splendid cover photo of Paris at dawn is of the Rue César Franck. Recommended strongly.
