John McCabe (piano) Helios: CDH55413 Helios bargain re-releases are always carefully selected, and it is good to have composer/pianist John McCabe's reliable account of Hindemith's important response to Bach's 48 back in the catalogue. It is all too rarely heard. No skimping; the booklet (black print on glossy white paper - rarer with younger trendy editors !) has excellent notes by Robert Matthew-Walker, illustrations by the composer and McCabe also gives us the jazzy Suite '1922' (recently reviewed in a new recording by Gourari). But for readers who like to listen on their computers, there is Richter's authorative recording to be found on YouTube: Astonishing how different this piece sounds filtered through the sensibilities (and fingers) of various pianists (Richter 1985) Peter Grahame Woolf See also CD reviewing - 3 from Hyperion |
