Cyprien Katsaris Collection

Marvellously varied additions to my vast and still growing precious Katsaris Piano21 collection, which has held a pride of place in my CDs/DVDs library for some years, particularly since September 2011 when I was privilged to meet this great pianist in transit through London for a charity concert in Caernarfon.

Sadly, efforts to achieve a review of that reportedly very successful recital, his first in UK for many years, proved unavailling, as have been repeated attempts to interest UK agents to promote Katsaris for UK recitals in England by his UK recordings distributor and by myself; similarly for fine specialist pianists such as Stephen Clarke, Ralph van Raat & Viviana Sofronitzki - to name but three.

One of those summarised our insularity thus:
" - - it is not very easy as a foreigner to get invited to perform in the UK - - ".

Each of these Katsaris discs is a very different and very personal, with many of the tracks not duplicating other recordings. There are illuminating notes, those for the French pieces especially, from fellow pianist & friend Christian Lorandin. Please see the comprehensive review at Audiofile Edition, which reflects exactly my admiration for this compilation.

The Chopin live selection has many favourites and less familiar works, including solo piano transcriptions from the cello sonata and piano concerto No 2, taken from performances and broadcasts world wide, every item fully documented. A joy from beginning to end.

The two duo-pianist arrangements of established chamber music favourites are sensational. The Schumann Op 44 quintet was arranged for piano 4 hands by Clara Schumann. She was also closely involved at all stages in the fraught reconsitution of Brahms' string quintet via this two-pianos version to its eventual form for piano and string quartet.

The partnership of Katsaris with Hélène Mercier is ideal and if Brahms had been able to hear this recording, I wonder if he would have felt it necessary to re-arrange it for piano and strings?

Piano Rarities Vol 1

A fascinating disc of transcriptions of music by various composers, mainly by Karol A Person (who is also a Professor of Physics !). Excellent comprehensive notes by Christian Lorandi.
