Vivat Brahms Vol. 1

Brahms cello sonata No 1 and
21 Hungarian Dances

Somm Records SOMM 0126 launch event

Conway Hall, London 6 June 2013

Award-winning musicians James Barralet and Simon Callaghan were joined by special guests to perform selected chamber music in celebration of Brahms' 180th birthday (plus one month) and a new SOMM release of his music.

This important project, masterminded by James Barralet, owes its success to the collaboration with Simon Callaghan [L], pianist curator of the Conway Hall Sundays series, which Musical Pointers has supported and reviewed regularly.

Before the party and CD signings there was an introduction by our hostess Siva Oke to a perfectly chosen selection of tracks from the first two releases (No 2 will follow shortly).

Callaghan and Barralet gave movements from the sonata and a selection of the Brahms/Barralet Hungarian Dances. Between those we enjoyed some of the viola songs, arranged for cello, viola and piano, with the cello on top taking the alto singer's line! Odd but interesting. As always, Callaghan made light of the difficulties of Brahms' piano writing and achieved perfect balance effortlessly.
