A special CD production of music by a composer we had enjoyed hearing and reviewing occasionally in London*, including at the City of London Festival 2010 which featured music of Portuguese speaking composers; special also because the main characters involved can be seen contributing to a YouTube video of a recording session of this ambitious portrait disc.

Tinoco has composed extensively for orchestra, and this selection is remarkable for including three song cycles, each one featuring a differen excellent singer. He has a penchant for the high soprano voice, and the booklet provides English texts for all the items (one of them sung in English) which is helpful when the singers reach the stratosphere, where words cannot reasonably expect to be heard.

As a Naxos bargain quality production, it can be recommended ureservedly.

* Mr. Tinoco studied composition with Paul Patterson at the Royal Academy of Music in London and with Nicola LeFanu at the University of York since 2006, where he is working on his PhD. He has also attended seminars with Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Franco Donatoni, among others.
