Myroslav Skoryk Preludes and Fugues in Db & F (1986-89) Tatiana Ursova is researching the leading Ukranian composer Myroslav Skoryk (b. 1938) for her PhD, and introduced to a UK audience the music of this still unknown figure in a pre-concert lecture Myroslav Skoryk: A play with styles? Skoryk comes from Lviv in western Ukraine and has an extensive, diverse oeuvre in every genre. He is eclectic in his sources, drawing on an accessible contemporary vocabulary and often from Ukrainian folklore. Besides concert and film music, he writes jazz, which informed the rhythmic vivacity of several of the works chosen to introduce him here. The piano pieces were enjoyable, requiring the considerable virtuosity delivered by Tatiana Ursova, who was joined by two colleagues to premiere representative works, which held the attention easily and would warrant inclusion in chamber music recitals to add variety to standard fare. Skoryk is one of Ukraine's most important professors of composition and travels frequently to concertise and lecture in Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia (but not yet UK, it appears). It was indicated that financial constraints in his troubled country have limited the dispersion of the music of Ukrainian composers to the West, and this concert was a small and useful step towards making a new name familiar in England. Myroslav Skoryk's music can be purchased on line via the Duma Music Inc website, which includes fuller biographical background, and can be recommend for advanced student pianists to explore.
