| Stephen Hough Queen Elizabeth Hall October 14 2005 An undemonstrative pianist, Stephen Hough gave a lucid account of the single movement which constitutes Alban Berg's overplayed Op 1 and followed it with a sound, but unmemorable, traversal of Schubert's leisurely Sonata in G D894. His Steinway was set up with a brightness in the treble that was not always appropriate. The second half sounded like a sequence of encores, starting with the Granados Valses Poeticos less interesting than Schubert's, on which they were modelled Spain, ending with Moszkowski's virtuosic Caprice Espagnole under full control of the pianist's fingers. Then there were more encores... An unadventurous recital to please a conservative audience easily. Hear it all and decide for yourself on BBC Radio 3, over Sunday lunch, 20 November 2pm? |
