Charlie Chaplin Festival
How to Make Movies, The Adventurer & The Circus

John Sweeney (piano) LPO/Carl Davis
Royal Festival Hall 29 November 2003

This was a three day event with discussions, documentary and presentations with musical accompaniments on piano and by the London Philharmonic Orchestra in Carl Davis's arrangements.

Of especial interest in our evening was a screening of a reconstructed How to Make Movies, with footage of Charlie rehearsing, filming and processing film - a real eye-opener into how things were done in the early days, enhanced by John Sweeney's improvisations.

Next a hilarious early 'Mutual', The Adventurer (1917) with Charlie as a resourceful escaped convict, with Carl Davis and a cinema orchestra sized LPO giving just the feel of how these shorts were seen and heard in their heyday.

Lastly The Circus (1928) with Charlie saving the day for an ailing circus, but finally losing the girl to the handsome trapeze artist, and wandering off alone into the sunset.

These Silver Screen Classics promotions attract large, enthusiastic and loyal audiences to the Festival Hall and are always rewarding.
