Brahms, Bridge & Schumann piano quartets Primrose Quartet: Susanne Stanzeleit violin 17 March 2013 Not one of Conway Hall Sundays best. Schumann & Brahms piano quartets, plus Bridge's Fantasy Quartet (one of numerous works composed for the Cobbett Competition which would not have presaged his better known importance as Britten's main teacher) did not make for a good programme. The Primrose Quartet has a huge discography, their discs on sale at the hall, specialising in the forgotten legacy of 20th century English composers. Their forthright accounts tonight bore no comparison with the subtleties of some younger groups heard in this series, e.g. Fournier Trio 3 March. Peter Grahame Woolf |
